An Old Fashioned Hardware Store

I love hardware stores, especially old fashioned hardware stores. I wanted to get airlock fermentation lids for the 1/2 gallon canning jars I acquired recently and thought I’d look locally before ordering online. The first place that came to mind was Renfrow Hardware in Matthews, about an hour drive from home. There is a farmer’s market next-door to the store, so it was something to do on a leisurely weekend day.

Here are a few inferior photos I took over four years ago with an inferior camera:

On our visit to Renfrow’s today I saw that they have a selection of fermentation crocks and weights, the same brand I purchased in Ohio a year ago in July. I don’t foresee ever needing a 10 gallon crock.

I didn’t find any airlock lids but they did have glass fermentation weights for widemouth jars. I found that green suction cup thingy in an office supply store. It is meant for leaning a cellphone against but I thought it would be handy for removing the weight out of a jar or lifting an inverted mold.

I ended up ordering airlock lids online.

At the farmers’ market, just up the block from the hardware store we purchased a Georgia Candy Roaster winter squash. Maybe I will fire up the charcoal grill tomorrow and give it a try.
